Sparkling Star Shape Exploration
Age Group: Preschool (Ages 3-5) Duration: 30-45 minutes
Objective: Students will learn to recognize, identify, and create activities centered around the star shape while engaging in cooperative play and creative expression.
Materials Needed:
- Star shape templates (various sizes)
- Scissors (for teacher use)
- Colored construction paper (yellow, blue, and other colors)
- Glitter (Remember a little glitter sparkles for a long time!)
- Glue
- Crayons and markers
- Blanket (for star-themed story time)
- Soft music (optional)
Activity Outline:
1. Introduction to Stars (5-10 minutes)
- Gather the children in a circle and ask them what they know about stars.
- Show them various star shapes and explain that a star is a special shape that we can see in the sky at night.
- Use flashlights to mimic stars twinkling. As you do this, encourage them to make star shapes with their hands. You can shine a flashlight through a colander and create stars too.
- Or use a star projector for a beautiful effect.

Star Shape Recognition (10 minutes)
- Hand out Star shape templates in different sizes and colors.
- Ask the children to identify the star and compare it with other shapes, such as circles, squares, and triangles.
- Discuss the characteristics of a star (points, symmetry, etc.) and ask them to count the points.

Creative Star Craft (15-20 minutes)
- Distribute colored construction paper and instruct the children to trace around the star templates to create a large star shape.
- Once they have cut out their star, they can decorate it with glue and sprinkle glitter for a sparkling effect.
- Provide crayons and markers for them to add designs—like smiling faces or other fun decorations.
- When finished, allow children to share their creations with the class and hang them on the classroom wall for a ‘Star Gallery.’

Movement Activity: Star Dance (5-10 minutes)
- Play soft music and encourage the children to dance like stars twinkling in the night sky.
- Guide them to stretch their arms out wide like the points of a star, sway gently, and watch how they can move in different directions.
- Instruct them to freeze when the music stops, holding their star shape until the music begins again.
Closing Reflection (5 minutes)
- Gather the children back in a circle and discuss what they learned about stars.
- Encourage them to share their favorite part of the activity or what they enjoyed most about their star creations.
- Pass out star stickers as a reward for participating in the activity.
