Sensory Bins

Sensory bins (filled with rice, beans, sand, water beads, pasta, etc.) Sensory Exploration: Fill a bin with a variety of textures, such as feathers, fur, and sandpaper.
Remember to always closely supervise children when they are using sensory bins. Some children may be tempted to put items in their mouths, ears or nose.
Seasonal Themes:
Autumn Harvest:
Base: Dried corn kernels, dried leaves, small pinecones.
Items: Mini pumpkins, gourds, cinnamon sticks, small toy squirrels.
Activities: Sorting by size, counting, creating fall scenes.
Winter Wonderland:
Base: Fake snow (baking soda and conditioner), cotton balls.
Items: Small toy polar bears, penguins, snowflake cutouts, silver bells.
Activities: Creating snowscapes, building snowmen, exploring "cold" textures.
Spring Garden:
Base: Colored rice (green), dried flower petals, small pebbles.
Items: Toy garden tools, plastic flowers, seed packets, small toy bugs.
Activities: Planting seeds (real or pretend), creating flower arrangements, exploring "growth."
Summer Beach:
Base: Play sand, seashells.
Items: Small toy boats, plastic sea creatures, beach balls, small buckets and shovels.
Activities: Building sandcastles, exploring ocean life, scooping and pouring.
Nature Walk:
Fill a bin with leaves, sticks, pinecones, and other natural materials.
Animal Themes:
Dinosaur Dig: Fill a bin with sand and hide dinosaur toys for children to excavate.
Base: Sand, small rocks.
Items: Plastic dinosaur bones, small brushes, magnifying glasses.
Activities: Excavating dinosaur bones, identifying different dinosaurs, learning about fossils.
Farm Animals: Fill a bin with dried corn kernels and add toy farm animals and vehicles
Base: Hay, dried corn.
Items: Toy farm animals, small toy tractors, miniature fences.
Activities: Feeding the animals, creating farm scenes, learning animal sounds.
Ocean Animals:
Base: Blue water beads, sand.
Items: Toy fish, seashells, plastic coral, small nets.
Activities: Catching fish, exploring ocean habitats, sorting shells.
Bug World:
Base: Small twigs, leaves, coffee grounds.
Items: Toy bugs, magnifying glasses, small containers.
Activities: Bug hunting, building bug habitats, observing insect features.
Construction Site: Fill a bin with sand, or gravel, and add toy construction vehicles and tools.
Base: Kinetic sand, small rocks.
Items: Toy construction vehicles, small blocks, construction cones.
Activities: Building structures, operating construction vehicles, creating roads.
Space Exploration: Fill a bin with black beans and add toy astronauts, rockets, and planets.
Base: Black beans, silver glitter.
Items: Toy astronauts, rockets, stars, moon rocks (painted rocks).
Activities: Exploring the "galaxy," creating space scenes, building rockets.
Fairy Garden:
Base: Colored rice, small gems, moss.
Items: Fairy figurines, small houses, glitter, small mirrors.
Activities: Building fairy homes, creating magical scenes, exploring fantasy.
Cooking Fun:
Base: Dried pasta, rice.
Items: Play cooking utensils, bowls, measuring cups, pretend food.
Activities: Pretend cooking, measuring ingredients, exploring different pasta shapes.
Color Exploration:
Base: Colored rice or noodles, water beads.
Items: Color sorting bowls, colored objects, color mixing tools.
Activities: Sorting by color, creating color patterns, mixing colors.
Shape Exploration:
Base: Sand, dried beans.
Items: Shape blocks, cookie cutters, shape sorting toys.
Activities: Making shapes in sand, sorting shapes, building structures.
Letter/Number Exploration:
Base: Rice, dried pasta.
Items: Magnetic letters/numbers, letter/number beads, letter/number cookie cutters.
Activities: Letter/number recognition, building words/numbers, sorting letters/numbers.
Texture Exploration:
Base: Assortment of different textured materials (cotton balls, pom poms, fabric scraps, sandpaper etc.)
Items: Various containers, scoops, and tools.
Activities: Sorting by texture, describing textures, exploring different tactile sensations.
Additional Ideas:
Underwater Adventure: Fill a bin with blue water beads and add plastic sea creatures, shells, and treasure.
Sensory Playdough: Fill a bin with colorful playdough and add cookie cutters, rolling pins, and other tools.
Water Play: Fill a bin with water and add cups, spoons, and other water-safe toys.
Shaving Cream Fun: Fill a bin with shaving cream and add food coloring, toys, and other objects.
Sensory Writing: Fill a bin with sand or shaving cream and have children write letters and numbers.
Sensory Art: Fill a bin with finger paints, brushes, and other art supplies.
Sensory Counting: Fill a bin with small objects, such as buttons or beads, and have children count them.
