Grown-Up Goals. Kid-Sized Joy. Learning in disguise.

Ball Play !

Objective: To develop gross motor skills, coordination, and social interaction through fun ball play activities. Duration: 30-45 minutes

Materials Needed:

- Soft balls (various sizes)

-Beanbags

- Hoops

-Cones (optional, for boundary marking)

Warm-Up (5-10 minutes):

Begin with a fun, light warm-up involving simple stretches to get the children's muscles ready for play. Encourage them to reach for the sky, touch their toes, and wiggle their bodies.

Activity Stations (20-25 minutes):

Divide the children into small groups and set up three activity stations:

Ball Toss into Hoops:

- Children take turns tossing soft balls into the hoops from a short distance (adjust distance based on their ability).

- Encourage them to count how many balls they get into the hoops.

- Challenge older kids to stand further away or try to toss from different angles.

Beanbag (or Pillow) Balance:

- Each child is given a beanbag (or a light weight pillow) to place on their head while they walk to a finish line a short distance away.

- If the beanbag falls, they must start over from a designated point.

- This promotes balance and concentration.

Here are the simple rules for "The Ten-Roll Challenge":

The Rules of the Game

  1. The "Sit and Split": Both players sit on the floor facing each other with their legs spread wide (like a "V"). This creates a "track" to help guide the ball.

  2. The Two-Hand Push: Use both hands to give the ball a gentle push. We want the ball to "hug the floor"—no bouncing or throwing!

  3. The Big Catch: The other player must stop the ball with both hands before it touches their tummy or goes past them.

  4. The Count-Up: Every time the ball is caught, everyone shouts the next number together (1... 2... 3...).

  5. The "Reset" Rule: If the ball rolls away or a catch is missed, that’s okay! Just say, "Let’s try again," and start back at number 1.

Teacher Tip:
  • Distance: Start with the children sitting close enough to almost touch toes, then have them "scoot back" one inch every time they reach the number 5.

  • Visual Aid: If the ball keeps rolling off to the side, place two jump ropes on the floor to create a "lane" or "river" for the ball to stay in.

  • The Big Finish: When they reach 10, have them do a "victory wiggle" or a high-five to celebrate their teamwork!

Teacher Shortcut: If you need soft, easy-to-grip foam balls or colorful sensory balls that won't roll too fast for little hands, we’ve linked our favorite classroom set here. You can have them shipped directly to your school so you're ready for gym time!
